This 1912 sterling silver thimble, paired with a small tourmaline set in 925, hangs off on a sterling silver chain with a small quartz.
After sharing an early version of the piece on our Instagram stories, someone mentioned the belief that bells can ward off spirits. That comment stayed with me and led me to explore the folklore around sound, protection, and personal talismans.
Across many cultures, bells have been used for centuries as protective objects, believed to cleanse spaces, mark thresholds, and repel negative or wandering spirits through sound. In medieval Europe, small bells were sewn into clothing or worn as amulets, while church bells were rung to signal sacred moments and drive away evil. Bells appear in ancient religious traditions, from biblical references to priests’ garments to Buddhist and Hindu rituals intended to invite peace, clarity, and good fortune. Today, bells still hold meaning in modern witchcraft, where their clear tone is used to shift energy, cleanse a space, or mark the start and end of ritual. Though the term “witches’ bells” is likely a modern one, the practice itself has deep, shared roots.
It is no secret that I love tourmalines. The black tourmaline is known as the elemental bodyguard, a true powerhouse of cleansing energy. This remarkable stone keeps you grounded and shields you from the clutches of anxiety, allowing you to navigate life with a sense of peace and strength. They are super bad ass super cleanser, that grounds, empowers and protects. They have the ability to cut right through spirally thoughts and get you to listen and trust you gut instinct! It can be very useful if you suffer from anxiety and it is the perfect repellent against energy vampires. They also look like they have been lifted up from the earths core. Love them. Along side all this, it also attracts good luck and prosperity as well.
The thimble is made by Williams J. Holmes, prolific maker of small sterling silver items from Birmingham in 1912.
This whole amulet is magical - small and precious, wild and beautfiul.
