It's the go-to stone for protection, carried for thousands of years tucked into doorways, worn against the skin, and set into rings and pendants by people wanting something solid to hold onto through uncertain times. African, Indian, and Roman traditions all point to its protective use, and medieval alchemists believed it warded off evil influence, a reputation that's barely changed today.
As a little guy, I've named this piece Schörlchen, a playful German diminutive of Schörl, the old mining term for black tourmaline, meaning something like 'little black tourmaline.'
