Small tumbled amethyst pendant, capped in copper on a thin Singapore-style (twisted for glimmer) sterling silver vintage chain. I've been encouraged to make more understated, smaller pieces, as we all have different styles.
Amethyst works across the emotional, spiritual, and physical body to promote balance, peace, and patience. It can be helpful in relieving anxiety, and is a wonderful crystal if you want to delve deeper during meditation — roaming more levels of consciousness. A great stone for the times. Some might call it a natural tranquiliser, but I prefer to see it as a mind protector: a point of pivot from repetitive thoughts, calming the brain and spirit to clear the path. This particular piece is tumbled, and though that doesn't change its properties as such, I find tumbled stones always carry a softer, more gentle offering — if that makes sense : )
The name amethyst comes from the Greek amethustos, meaning "non-drunk." In ancient Greece, cups were carved from the purple stone in the belief that drinking from them could prevent intoxication — we can certainly test that theory, though not with this piece.
The origin of the stone itself is told in myth: Artemis transformed a mortal maiden named Amethystos into white quartz to protect her from the drunken rage of Dionysus. Remorseful, he poured wine over the statue, staining it purple — and so the amethyst was born, a symbol of purity and sobriety ever since.
