These artisanal miners using the same techniques of their ancestors did - the crystals are gathered with hand tools and the small road side mines are refilled after the crystals have been taken so as not to jeopardise the landscape and structure of the road/cliff side.

Responsible crystal mining practices, such as small-scale, hand-tool mining and reclamation of the land, can help preserve the natural landscape and support the livelihoods of local communities. It is hard to collect crystals and feel like you aren’t pillaging the earth - they spend hundreds/thousands of years peacefully undisturbed. But there are ways in which crystals can be extracted in less invasive ways. Purchasing ethically sourced crystals may come with a higher cost, but it's an investment in supporting fair wages, sustainable development projects, and re-education and retraining for miners to diversify their work/life path. These artisanal mining community members don’t dedicate all their time to the activity; they also fish, hunt, and cultivate subsistence crops, so mining can be done seasonally and sustainably.
Artisanal miners are often caught between government legislation (giving larger mining companies benefits so as to attract multinational investors to buy up land) and exploitative criminal organisations who thrive trading gold and crystals illegally and often exploit the indigenous communities (through racketeering/sex trafficking and other means).
Small-scale miners can be formalised, allowing the communities to trade more easily, open bank accounts, protect the environment and avoid going through illegal routes. But the whole process of formalising is costly and bureaucratic - hence the prices of ethical crystals equates to what they require to change the cycle and compete with the large companies.
